Working Dinner with Mr. Yvo de Boer, KPMG's Special Global Advisor, Climate Change and Sustainabilit

Aspen Institute Romania, in partnership with KPMG Romania, had the pleasure of organizing a working dinner on the theme "Economic Development Strategies and Sustainability Trends" having as main guest Mr. Yvo de Boer, KPMG's Special Global Adviser on Climate Change and Sustainability, and former Executive Secretary to the UN Framework Climate Change Convention.
Together with Mr. de Boer we focused on topics connected with sustainability in developing economic strategies, in the private and public sectors as well as taking a look at the future of the energy sector in Europe, with a special focus on the Black Sea region. Mr. de Boer's high level experience in sustainable growth and development, as well as his senior role and experience within KPMG stired up strong and noteworthy debates with the Aspen and KPMG participants.
The dinner conversation took place according to the Aspen method, with closed doors. Participants included Aspen Members and Aspen Fellows, as well as representatives from large business organizations, KPMG and the public sector.
Mr. Yvo de Boer is KPMG's Special Global Advisor, Climate Change and Sustainability.  In this role he is responsible for thought leadership on strategy development, driving the development of KPMG's Sustainability Service as a global ambassador for KPMG.
He is the former chair of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Climate Change. Prior to joining KPMG, Mr de Boer was Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the body responsible for a multi-lateral response to the climate change challenge.
Mr de Boer has been involved in climate change policies since 1994.  He has helped to prepare the position of the European Union in the lead-up to the negotiations on the Kyoto Protocol, assisted in the design of the internal burden sharing of the European Union and has since led delegations to the UNFCCC negotiations.
He has actively sought broad stakeholder involvement on the issue of climate change.  To that end, he launched an international dialogue on the clean development mechanism and has partnered international discussions with the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, aimed at increasing private sector involvement. He also organized several international conferences on the role of markets in climate policy and on strategies for sustainable growth.
Alongside his work for KPMG Mr. de Boer is Professorial Fellow at the University of Maastricht and is a certified mediator. He is a Council Member of the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (and co-chair of the taskforce on Climate and Energy), a member of the Green Growth Leaders, a member of the Capital Markets Climate Initiative steering group (established by UK Climate Minister Greg Barker), a Board Member of the Carbon Markets International Association, a member of the International Advisory Group of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, as well as a Board member of the Carbon Markets International Association.  Since 2013 he is a panel member of distinguished scientists and experts in reviewing the 2013 Global Assessment Report for Disaster Risk Reduction
