Young Leaders Program 2008

The 2008 Programme

The programme consisted of four modules over the year, offering a variety of intellectual and personal development activities, beginning in April and concluding in December.  The first three modules were residential sessions at a venue outside Bucharest.

Module I: "The Good Society" (15-20 April 2008)

A 5-6 day seminar modelled on the Aspen Institute Executive Seminar  where participants discussed the concepts of political and economic thinking that have shaped modern open societies.  A selection of writings - in English - by the key political philosophers of the past two centuries formed the basis for debate. Participants debated these ideas in the context of present-day Romania and the challenges posed by Romania's specific social and historical legacy, and discussed the qualities required for good leadership.

Module II:  "Modern Leadership" (3-8 June 2008)

A 5 day training programme encompassing assessment of leadership qualities and styles; practical training in skills and technique; teambuilding exercises; and presentation of case studies. Relevant readings and course materials provided in advance.

Module III: "Leadership Challenges Today" (9-14 September 2008)

A 4 day series of half-day round-table sessions where participants debated the key issues challenging Romanian society today from different perspectives. The participants gained an overview of the economic, political, environmental, social questions facing Romanian leaders today, assesed the European and international implications and tried to identify potential areas for action.  Readings were provided to stimulate debate.

As a characteristic of the 2008 generation, speakers from various fields were also present at the debates, among them being: former Romanian President Emil Constantinescu; Adrian Chebutiu, President and CEO, UCM Resita; Dumitru Costin, President, BNS; Liviu Voinea, Director, GEA; Tudor Constantinescu. former ARCE President; Bogdan Chiritoiu, former Presidential Advisor; Mariana Campeanu, former Minister of Labor; Anca Harasim, Executive Director, American Chamber of Commerce in Romania; Raduta Matache, former State Secretary, MFA or Christian Mititelu, Journalist.

Module IV: "Community Service"

An exercise to be carried out by each participant over the year involving the identification, design, and implementation of a community service project which will illustrate the participant's talent for creativity, persuasion, planning, delivery, team-working and overall leadership. Projects may be developmental, communitarian, educational, or environmental.  They should not be linked with any single political party initiative. The participants will be expected to identify and deliver the necessary funding for their projects.
